At a time when culinary mastery and culinary innovation reign, Barcelona has risen to the pinnacle of epicurean excellence and is now being hailed as the culinary capital of the world. This anointment, a testament to the city’s gastronomic prowess, is encapsulated by the accolade bestowed on Disfrutar, recently crowned the best restaurant in the world by The World’s 50 Best Restaurant List, and Sips, a beacon of mixological marvels revered as the best bar in the world by the same organisation. The two luminaries are just four minutes walk away from each other, making Barcelona the epicentre of gourmet enchantment.Especially also when you look at Michelin accolades as of Spain’s 15 three Michelin-starred restaurants, 4 are in Barcelona - more than any other city in the Iberian Peninsula. Those are:Lasarte (2017)ABaC (2018)Hermanos Torres (2022)Disfrutar (2023)…of which I am pleased that Bon Vivant Communications has the great honour of representing two.But what exactly does it mean to have three Michelin stars? What does the prestigious guide value when granting this recognition? In grand documentary 'Michelin Stars - Tales from the Kitchen', which I happened to co-produce, the red guide’s former managing director, Michael Ellis, lists the gastronomic criteria they take into account. This piece by Vanitatis/El Confidencial (in Spanish) goes in-depth with these matters while also offering a great overview and insight into the four three Michelin-starred restaurants of Joan Miró’s city and why you should visit them.“Radiografía de los restaurantes triestrellados de Barcelona”https://lnkd.in/ddENNXRj

Last night The MICHELIN Guide threw a party in NYC. The 100-year-old restaurant guide have been on an expansion tear lately: They've given out new stars in Atlanta and Colorado and announced that they will, finally, start awards in Mexico in 2024.But for three of America’s most storied culinary destinations - New York, Chicago and Washington - Michelin has consolidated into one ceremony. Combined they represented 117 total starred restaurants. Is that a good thing? As it is, Michelin is on the verge of having a star announce every other day. They want to make sure "there isn’t an overabundance of Michelin Guide ceremonies, which might water down the excitement and intrigue,”said none other than Gwendal Poullennec, the guide's International Director. And back to the awards: It was an excellent night for Japanese food in multiple guises in NYC, especially Sushi Noz and Odo restaurant, which were bumped up to two stars from one. Around a quarter of the places with stars in NYC are Japanese; and yay for Korean restaurants in the Big Apple - almost a dozen of them now have stars including the meat-focused counter Bom and my favorite Cote NYC. Also, the US has a new three-star restaurant. Congrats to Smyth in Chicago! and a round of applause for all the Michelin award winners. Exploring Culinary Gold: The Essence of Luxury in GastronomyEdible gold, often found as 24-karat gold leaf or flakes, is a non-reactive and flavorless element, making it a purely aesthetic addition to fine dining experiences. Chefs use it to adorn everything from luxurious desserts and confectioneries to exquisite main dishes and even co*cktails, adding a touch of elegance and grandeur. Historically, edible gold was a symbol of wealth and prestige, savored by nobility and used in traditional medicines. Today, it represents the pinnacle of culinary artistry, offering a visually stunning experience that complements the gastronomic excellence of high-end cuisine. As diners eat dishes garnished with gold, they partake in a centuries-old tradition of opulence, enjoying a sensory experience that transcends taste, embodying the intersection of culinary craftsmanship and artistic expression.

Wine holds a venerable place in the gastronomy and cultures of the world, intricately woven into the social and culinary tapestries of numerous countries. Its significance extends beyond mere beverage, acting as a symbol of heritage, craftsmanship, and the enjoyment of dining. In places like France, Italy, and Spain, wine is not just a drink but a pivotal element of identity and tradition, celebrated through festivals and meticulously paired with local cuisines to enhance flavors and dining experiences. The cultivation of vineyards and the craft of winemaking have also shaped the economic and physical landscapes of these areas, influencing agricultural practices and tourist industries. While many of the positions in all guest service sectors may leave us due to technology... a human will always need to be present to extoll the virtues of the experience. www.DerekEngles.com#wine #wineeducation #winearticles #restaurant #hospitalityindustry #hospitality #education #innovation #management #marketing #digitalmarketing #fyi
